How To Measure Your Dog for a Halloween Costume

Whether you're looking for something cute, funny, or scary, you'll be able to find a costume that's perfect for your Shih Tzu.

But keep in mind, there is no one-size-fits-all.

The best way to measure a small dog for a costume will vary depending on the dog's size, the amount of hair they have, and the specific costume being purchased.

Measuring your dog for a Halloween costume is relatively easy, although it is important to be accurate.

Costumes that are too tight could impede natural movement and restrict blood flow. At the same time, costumes that are too loose may cause them to trip over it or could fall off entirely while they are walking.

To measure your dog accurately, you will need:

  • A soft and flexible measure tape.
  • Pen and paper to record each measurement.
  • Treats to reward your dog for cooperating with you.
  • Sizing chart of the costume you are purchasing.

Typically, the seller will include a sizing chart in the description of the costume you are purchasing.

  • Sizing chart of the costume you are purchasing.

The costume dimensions will be listed on the sizing chart, so you will know exactly what to measure on your dog.

For instance, you will need to take measurements in various places on your dog's body if the costume covers most of your dog's body.

In contrast, if you are just wrapping a bandana around your dog's neck, you only need to know how wide their neck is.

The chest and the neck will most likely be the two most essential measurements, so let's begin there.

To measure your dog's chest girth, start by placing the measuring tape at the widest point of your dog's rib cage and gently pulling it around.

To measure your dog's neck, place the measuring tape under your dog's neck and gently drag the tape around your dog's neck just as you did for their chest.

Allow some extra wiggle room for your dog by adding a couple additional inches to both the chest and neck measurements. This will help ensure that your dog will have a better and more comfortable fit.

The next thing you need to do is determine your dog's length.

With your dog standing still, lay the measuring tape beginning at where the collar rests on his neck, then pull the tape in a straight line along his spine until you get to the base of the tail.

When it comes to finding the right size costume for your dog, here are a couple things to keep in mind.

1. You may need to alter the measurement for male dogs. For example, if the costume doesn't have a cut out for his groin and belly, you may want to consider shortening the length slightly to lessen the probability of urinating on the costume.

2. If your dog falls in the middle of two sizes, you should go with the larger one.

Halloween Night Tips for Safety

Just a few simple safety pointers to keep in mind if you plan on taking your Shih Tzu out and about on Halloween.

  • Ensure that you have a flashlight with you at all times.
  • Make sure your dog's costume fits them comfortably and add some reflective tape to it so he can be seen at night by others.
  • If you take your dog out for a walk, always be sure his harness is on, and he is securely leashed. Alternatively, you may consider using a stroller or another type of dog carrier to charter your dog around it.
  • Always have a supply of your Shih Tzu's favorite treats on hand so they can graze on those instead of sugar.
  • Your dog may become anxious if there is a lot of excitement and loud noises in the surroundings. Pay attention to how your dog reacts and make adjustments as necessary.

Halloween is not just for humans! Whether your pup is a superhero, an angel or something else, these fun dog costumes are perfect for Halloween.

Be safe and have fun!
